Living and Working Through Climate Change: Emotional Resilience
Climate adaptation is often discussed through the lenses of projection data, infrastructure planning, policies, and financial risk management. But behind every plan or policy decision are people who must live with the changes already happening around them, as well as the people whose work is focused on preparing communities for what comes next.
As climate impacts become more frequent and harder to ignore, they can also bring anxiety, grief, trauma, uncertainty, and exhaustion. These experiences are felt by people living through floods, extreme heat, displacement, and environmental loss, but also by the practitioners, planners, advocates, researchers, teachers, and community leaders who work on these issues every day.
What does it mean to live and work through climate change? How can we give proper recognition to the individual and collective climate grief and anxiety being experienced by so many people, especially our younger generations? How do we continue to urgently address the climate crisis while supporting practitioners increasingly facing exhaustion and burnout? And what can psychology, community practice, storytelling, and the arts teach us about building connection, hope, and the ability to act?
