SUMMARY:Underwater Underwriting: Flood Insurance in the Age of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:More than 50 million people in the U.S. are at risk from flooding either along rivers and streams or in coastal areas. This number is only rising as climate change causes more extreme precipitation\, hurricanes and nor’easters\, sea level rise\, and more. However\, current publicly available flood risk assessment tools are not sufficient to quantify future flood risk and federal flood insurance programs and policies are not yet equipped to address the growing threat. \nThe National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through its flood insurance\, flood mapping\, and floodplain management requirements plays a critical role in state and local climate adaptation efforts. Yet\, the NFIP’s flood maps are often outdated and do not consider future risks from climate change. While many agree reforms are necessary\, attempts to better reflect current and future risks could also impose significant costs on low income communities and communities of color\, exacerbating existing patterns of racial inequality in the housing market. \nJoin us for this EBC/UMass Boston Climate Adaptation Forum to learn about the intersection of flood insurance\, risk management\, and environmental justice. SUMMARY:Managed Retreat Workshop: Legal and Policy Tools for States and Local Communities
DESCRIPTION:Organized by the Georgetown Climate Center (GCC) and the Climate Adaptation Forum\, this workshop will offer participants the opportunity to engage in a facilitated discussion on managed retreat (i.e. relocating development from vulnerable coastal areas) and the legal and policy considerations impacting land-use decisions and human and natural resources movements in response to sea-level rise. \nParticipants will share their own work and learn from other experts across disciplines confronting questions about managed retreat as one strategy for adapting to rising seas and increased flooding. In addition\, participants will have an opportunity to inform ongoing work by the GCC to create an online Managed Retreat Toolkit which is being designed to support state and local government decisions about how to adapt to rising sea levels (forthcoming in Fall 2019).

SUMMARY:Risk Management Choices: Adaptation Strategies by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Insurance Industry
DESCRIPTION:The Second Climate Adaptation Forum\, organized jointly by the Environmental Business Council and the Sustainable Solutions Lab at UMass Boston\, will focus on climate change adaptation strategies in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and a discussion of the insurance industry’s approach to climate change risk management. \nModels of future climate change are the drivers for international and local efforts to adapt to sea level rise and extreme weather\, including excessively high temperatures\, heavy downpours\, and in some regions\, severe floods and droughts.
